Australia’s Key Biodiversity Areas: Discover Nature’s Hotspots

20 March 2017

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are nature’s hotspots. They are the most important places left for life on earth. Australia’s KBAs are the irreplaceable homes of birds and other wildlife that make our country unique – they are places we love. And many are closer than you might think.

Despite their global significance, many KBAs don’t receive the protection they deserve. As a result, the health of these special places is in decline. But we can turn this around. BirdLife Australia is working with local communities to improve recognition of the value of these places, and finding solutions to the threats they face. Everyone can play a role in safeguarding the future of Australia’s nature hotspots – will you join us?

Thanks to the BirdLife staff and volunteers who generously donated footage for this…

About 70 participants representing 7 countries, gathered in Cairo for the 5 th

International MENAW Conference on “Back on Track” from March 7-9, 2017.

Those attending the Opening Ceremony included HE Prof Dr. Mona Mehrez ,

The Deputy Minister of Agriculture in Charge of Animal Wealth and Poultry and

Prof.Dr. Gaber Nasser, President of Cairo University was the guest of the

second day.

There were “lively” discussions and debates, as one would expect (and hope

for) at such a conference. The presentations covered companion animals,

wildlife , and farming/livestock issues. Presenters included international and

national NGOs and societies, as well as government officials, judges.

Posters in Arabic, and English on a range of animal welfare topics.

These posters were posted around the conference hall for all to see and

generate ideas. T

And, of course, there was much networking and exchange of ideas and

lessons learned. We also had great lunch menus of vegetarian food. As usual,

there were some rough edges, glitches, schedule changes and sessions that

ran over, but in general the conference went well with the understanding and

flexibility of the participants.

The conference adopted a number of recommendations (see separate

resolutions section). And what role MENAW should play was discussed as well

as how MENAW should be structured.

Thanks to all the participants and sponsors who made this conference

possible.

On behalf of the organizing committee

Ahmed El Sherbiny

Our public lands are not killing fields: Stop unethical hunting practices

Our public lands are not killing fields: Stop unethical hunting practices

Wolves of Douglas County WI Films

Opinion Editorial by Carole P. Ryan Ph.D., Milwaukee, Wisconsin

I oppose the restoration of cruel “so-called” hunting practices on Public Wildlife Refuges in Alaska (H.J. Res. 69 & S.J. 18)

I strongly oppose the recent voting actions by five of our Wisconsin United States Representatives, who swiftly and quietly, voted in favor of H.J. Resolution 69, authored by Alaska’s Rep. Don Young (R). The intent of Resolution 69, is to rollback a federal rule that was crafted to stop some of the most appalling “so-called” hunting practices imaginable on 16 national wildlife refuges covering 76 million acres in the state of Alaska. The Wisconsin Representatives who voted to remove critical rules protecting wildlife from cruel hunting practices on Alaskan Public Lands were Duffy, Gallagher,Grothman, Kind, and Sensenbrenner. Representatives Moore and Pocan opposed! Sadly, the US House of Representatives’ Republican majority vote passed this resolution, 225 to 193.

The Five Most Pro-Animal House Democrats

Exposing the Big Game

Fighting the good fight.

The animal movement, for too long, has relied on individual tactics. Many activists spend their time encouraging individuals to adopt a vegan diet. A much smaller number carry out acts of terror against animal exploiters. Far from being diametrically opposed, these groups often share an understandable—but self-defeating—pessimism about collective, political engagement. The truth is we can’t afford to leave the electoral arena to animal abusers. Below are the five most animal-friendly Democrats in the House of Representatives, who we should support and push to do better.

Using the Humane Society Legislative Fund’s 2016 scorecard, there was initially a 37-way tie for most pro-animal House Democrat, which is actually synonymous with most pro-animal representative. All of these politicians received 100-percent ratings from HSLF, while earning extra credit for leadership on animal protection issues. To break this tie, I examined scores going back to 2012…
